The Rules of The New Year's Eve Road

DO dress appropriately for the weather. Cabs get full and plans change, you don't wanna be that guy/girl.

DON'T be surprised (carry extra cash money). Door covers are different and go up and down as the owner/promoter sees fit. It's a dirty game, New Year's Eve partying is, don't lose by forfeiting due to ignorance. It's blissful 'til you can't see your friends or be joyous ringing in the new year.

DO take cabs all night. If you don't live in a cab friendly area, make arrangements to spend that night at a FRIEND'S house (not some guy/girl who you don't really like but are just crashing with because it's convenient, lol). Unless you are NOT drinking at all on NYE, you have no business behind a wheel.

DON'T worry about your friends at the door. If you told them to be somewhere or buy their tickets in advance, and they get there late or don't want to pay the cover, THEIR BAD!

DO not be a cheap ass. Carry cash to check your coat + tip at the venue you're celebrating at. Cash for cab rides + tip. Cash for drinks + tip, if you'd like (I don't think you wanna deal w/ cards @ the bar unless you're getting bottle service). Cash to pay your waiter + tip (again, less hassle w/ the cards, if you ask me). Money enough to stay at the Ritz, just in case, lol (plus tip, ha).

DON'T expect people to stand by their word on New Year's Eve. Make back up plans. Please don't think that people will pay you back for drinks/pay for the next round, lol. Can you tell that people are whack and tend to lose all of their sense on holidays, yet?

DO keep your resolutions in mind. I honestly think that a big part of people failing on resolutions/goals is when they say: This will be my last time (insert res. here)! No, just start, don't put it off.

DON'T break the bank. If you have a budget, stick to it. NYE is not the time to be trying to fit in. If anything, it's time to break away from old, expensive and useless habits. There's no need to be completely wasted or be in a nightclub or spend a lot of money on a pair of shoes that will probably be RUINED by the nights end. Call your friends and cook dinner, rent your fave movie, celebrate with family or splurge if you realize you can afford it. Just don't over extend yourself.

DO realize that, the club isn't going anywhere. Remember the back-up plans I told you to have? Go there. Everybody gets wound up a little on big holidays. It's better to be warm and cozy at midnight then it is to be shivering and getting texts from all of your friends (and people who you probably haven't spoken to in months) e-yelling: HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!!!!!!!

DON'T send those mass "Happy New Year!" texts out. Send them to the people that count, add some more sentiment and call it one. It's actually pretty tacky--mass texting--if you ask me.

DO put your enjoyment above all things. Don't let stupid people or things throw you off. No fighting in the clubs or on the streets. Be kind and stay cool.

DON'T wear anything uncomfortable. As a matter of fact, don't really try anything TOO new for your NYE outfit/behavior. Stick to what you can count on for a good time. Carry cute fold-able flats or take precaution and put in shoe liners, thick socks, etc.

DO stick to your limit. We all know that it's a holiday, but that doesn't mean anything. Vomit is never going to be in style and I doubt Chanel will ever make aspirin for that hangover-headache of yours. Honestly: If alcohol makes you "better", you have other--bigger things to consider for yourself in 2011. It's cool to get a LITTLE drunk but, it's not cool to be asleep on the sidewalk and then waking up, wondering where your friends are.

DON'T worry. Just be smart. I don't know much about crime in the downtown areas during NYE. Where I'm from, we all know that people shoot at midnight or before . . . so we prepare accordingly (I personally hide under the dining room table with my thumb on the 9 and a pot on my head! lol -- kidding). If you're carrying cash, tuck some everywhere or, carry a cross body bag vs. a clutch. If strange men/women approach you, make a wise decision on how to avoid them (sometimes it means being direct, sometimes it means finding a place to go into just in case).

DO use protection. For real. If you're one of those people or might accidentally/be inaugurated into that group this weekend, use protection and carry all kinds. Magnums, regular sized (because that's what most men are ANYWAY, lol), latex free in case a guy/girl is allergic. New Years day should be something you reflect on, not regret for the following year (or 18+).

DON'T discount the buddy system. If you're rolling with a crew, keep tabs, ride together, etc. If you roll with a phony/green crew, choose your buddy wisely. People act brand new on New Year's Eve. Pick someone dependable, even if that means bringing someone from the outside of the clique with you. If you're rolling with a big crew, make meet-up points because it's a good chance everyone won't be able to get in. If you're rolling w/ a crew, just expect nothing to go the way it should [too many different opinions/voices]. You really should only be going out with your true friends who you ride the same wave with. This will make you and your friend the control and the night the variable. You guys will have a good time regardless.

DO have a good time. If your boyfriend/girlfriend is sweating you by calling or texting, shut the phone off (if you can). If someone is hitting on you and you don't like them, walk away. I think these are normal things that people should do every day but, I'm guessing that people will pay more attention since it's a holiday post. You'll probably still worry about it but, let someone in a cheerful or good mood brighten your night [NOT cunning people though, we call those creeps for short], jump in on the soul train line, toast to better things and LAUGH LAUGH LAUGH. Those will help you forget your worries.

DON'T leave the house without your essentials:
A fully charged cell phone.
Make-up for touch-ups.
A fully charged camera (attach the wristlet this time, less to worry about).
Cash (even if you plan on using a card all night . . . TAKE CASH WITH YOU! At least $50.).
Something to cover your neck and/or shoulders.
Your I.D.
Gum or breath mints.
Feminine products
Condoms
Flat shoes
*When I walk out of the house, everyday, I literally say: "Keys, I.D., money, cell phone," to myself. Try to travel as light as possible.

DO eat. A lot. It's NYE, you shouldn't be saying: "I have to fit into my dress," to yourself, tonight. It's not the Grammys or Oscars (yet). Relax. You'll thank me in the morning.

DON'T forget to have your hangover remedy stocked up at home. My crew actually does a PRE-drinking "thing" where they all take B12 vitamins. It doesn't do anything for me [side-eye] but, you can research it for yourself and test it out if you want to. Go to Whole Foods and ask the vitamin lady/man which one is best. The last time I bought some, the lady told me there are two different ones so, they should be able to help you.

2010 has been a great year for me. It has been filled with a lot to celebrate and enough to regret. When I do the math, I actually come out in the black, regardless (thanks God). I would like to thank all of my friends, family and supporters who have helped me be the best me in all of my situations this year. 2011 will be a great ride and filled with new lessons and opportunity. I look forward to crossing over into the new year even more fearless than before. Many blessings to you and yours from 2011 until infinity!

Much love,

Old White Men

So, the other day I was sending all these names of fine ass women that I wanted my boyfriend to Google. His first question was... "Should I wonder why you are checking out hot women?" I thought "Yes," but, I played it cool with, "I mean, you can't deny a beautiful woman when you see one, can you?" Then he asked, "Well, what men do you think are attractive?" I didn't know. There are no famous men who I just swoon over. Not Brad, not Denzel, not Johnny. I didn't have an answer, until I found this blog called The Impossible Cool. Thanks to this blog, I realized that I have a thing for old white men! Old men in general but, for the sake of tying the title with the post, they are mostly old and white . . . and FINE!

Marlon Brando

Cary Grant

Clint Eastwood

Paul Newman

James Dean

My theory is that I think these men are attractive because my parents basically raised me on classic films and WTTW. I already have this thing for all things old school so, the blog caught my eye but the deeper I went, the more I was like: HE IS SO, FINE! save to desktop -- lol.

So there you have it, babe! I find old white actors fine, even in their old age, honestly. Paul Newman!? Clint Eastwood!? Yes please!

And now the world knows. And I am embarrassed, lol. What if I told you that a masked man stood with a gun to my head saying that I MUST confess my secret to the whole innanets?

Ahhh, that feels better. : )

WORTH IT: A Letter To John Lennon

Dear John Lennon,

You would have been 70 today. Did you know that you would be such a big deal that people would celebrate your birthday they day before for no reason? You were pretty bad ass and I think it's cool that you were against a war like you were an American. You rolled with some pretty dope people too, Bobby Seale, Abbot "Abbie" Hoffman, what a posse! You have inspired me through your music and your activism.

P.S. If you had Twitter, I would totally follow you, RT you and @ mention you like we were really friends--if you ever responded, I would freak out.

Love,

Melissa T.

WATCHING THE WHEELS*
by
John Lennon

People say I'm crazy doing what I'm doing
Well they give me all kinds of warnings to save me from ruin
When I say that I'm o.k. well they look at me kind of strange
Surely you're not happy now you no longer play the game

People say I'm lazy dreaming my life away
Well they give me all kinds of advice designed to enlighten me
When I tell them that I'm doing fine watching shadows on the wall
Don't you miss the big time boy you're no longer on the ball

I'm just sitting here watching the wheels go round and round
I really love to watch them roll
No longer riding on the merry-go-round
I just had to let it go

Ah, people asking questions lost in confusion
Well I tell them there's no problem, only solutions
Well they shake their heads and they look at me as if I've lost my mind
I tell them there's no hurry
I'm just sitting here doing time

I'm just sitting here watching the wheels go round and round
I really love to watch them roll
No longer riding on the merry-go-round
I just had to let it go
I just had to let it go
I just had to let it go

Worth Knowing: Your Thoughts

Recently, Bill Gates and Warren Buffett invited a gang of millionaires and billionaires to dinner. From what I know, the dinner was held on the outskirts of Beijing at this swanky French restaurant. The guests were mainly (only?) Chinese business magnates and rich as HELL. The purpose was to basically convince them to give away a large sum of their personal income/profit away to charities around China and the world like many billionaires in our region of done recently. Apparently, a lot of people didn't RSVP, with good reason. They say it's because wealth in China is almost frowned upon. When the Chinese consider the amount of wealth these men (women?) have, they figure that they must have been doing something shady at some point in time to accumulate these dollars, or yuan for that matter. Many wealthy Chinese are often captured and put in prison and even more than that, rather than support the circulation of the yuan to the poor, many random people in China think that it's better/smarter for these men (women?) to give the money to their family versus giving the money to charity. I guess this comes from the idea that they don't want to upset the government. Seems like the rich and poor in China sort of "fear" (for lack of a better word) taking the shine away from the support that the Chinese govt. gives to their people, basically, they don't want to cast any shadows if they don't need to.

From what I've heard, a few more people showed up than expected according to the RSVP list and one man decided to give all of his money away to charity when he dies. (lol--that's not funny)

What do you guys think? Did you know about the view of wealth in China already? What do you make of it? What have you learned after studying/hearing about this idea? Are you proud of our Americans (Gates/Buffett) trying to move the world's most rich men to do "good"?

THM Broadcasting Live: On the weekends.

Things change. Seasons come, and they go. Like I said two posts ago, I JUST got a job recently so (thankfully) my schedule is a LITTLE bit tighter than ever before. Rather than be sporadic with my posts, I've decided to move this all to the weekends. So, tune in on Friday, Saturday and Sunday for your dose of The Honorable Mention.

I will also be incorporating some new things into this blog that will make it more of an asset to you all. Kind of excited. (Thx to the job, I can actually invest cold hard cash [or invisible credit lines] into this baby and make it everything I've dreamed it to be.)

I'm still getting into the groove so, give me a sec. to adjust to my new schedule and we will be back on track.

NOTE: Wouldn't it be nice to actually have THM Broadcasting on your computers and televisions? Yes it would. Let's work on that too!

Talk soon.

Edit: Have you considered following me on twitter?

Worth Knowing: "America Is Not Working"

Remember the post I did, "Like a National Mood Ring"? Well this blows the mood of Twitter users out of the water. This is pertinent information because I know too many people who can relate. Click the pic and watch the vid., it will seriously take your breath away.

Best wishes to all of my fellow internet users who are on the hunt for a job. I was just blessed to get one a few months ago after almost a full year of no legitimate employment. It's hard out here but, it's always too early to give up. Keep looking, keep your head up.

More than an @ mention...

I learned a very small, necessary lesson today, people are always watching you. I started this blog because I think people want to know, believe in and learn something different. I will not lie and say that I know exactly what the difference is from. Oftentimes I feel like I am saying what people already know but, I can also say that I am proud of my product. I am also proud to say that someone else is too!

Today, my sister forwarded and e-mail to me from our dear friend, David. David does stuff--my sister knows him better than me. He's one of those people who is always everywhere but, never there at the same time. Superbowl weekends, hip parties, charity functions, chic lounges... the man is simply, tapped in. He and I always gather around the libations at functions and talk about traveling, where to go, what to see and who to get the deals from.

Some time ago, David started sending out e-mail blasts to his network of friends, family, co-workers and associates. It's the less corporate Daily Candy or Thrillist (awesome reference site) because there are no sponsors (yet) paying for placement or mentions. The man is simply letting everyone know where to be because he knows that, he knows that, that is where it will be going DOWN (you feel me?). He does, however, have fine print that reads: "Below are several events for your enjoyment. There are sure to be other things going on, but if you hit 50% of these spots you should be worn out." How awesome is that?

So, without further ado and three grammatically incorrect paragraphs later, I am proud to say that, THM has been so lucky, and honored, to be mentioned at the top of his list of websites to visit over this Labor Day weekend! : ) I will be honest and say that, I have no clue why he would mention THM and I really wonder how he caught wind of my little operation here in my bedroom but, I'LL TAKE IT!

Thanks so much for the shout out, D! I really do know and trust your impeccable taste so that means that SOMETHING is being done well on THM. So with your gesture, I am inspired to continue to work hard at THM and stay true to whatever the heck it is I think I'm doing.

Much love.

THM Family, meet Pim and Jeffrey

IF you leave it up to me, I am a self-proclaimed kitchen sink, and am the best rapper alive (see my Twitter profile). Along with these, I consider myself a budding foodie. Not nearly as much as my sister, Erin, but all of my senses activate when I am around any type of food and, I rank eating second to sex as the most sensual things you can do with others. You may be familiar with Pim and Jeffrey because both are food writers, authors and judges on the popular Food Network show, Iron Chef America. Click on their pictures to learn more about their beginning and maybe, just maybe, you can enjoy their middle as much as I and the rest of "foodie" nation are right now.

WORTH A TRY: 10 Tech Tools to make it through the final days of summer

Whether a vacation to the Greek Islands or a long afternoon by the pool are in order for the final months of summer, these tools will ensure worry-free good times during the last hoorah.

1.) PSP Go: There are so many different types of games for different types of people, these days. From Final Fantasy to Spanish Coach, this little bugger can keep anybody busy for hours during travel.

2.) Freeloader Pro: This "green" gadget is a traveling solar powered charging unit. Small enough to fit in a personal bag yet packs enough power and compatibility to charge all the other electronics thrown in that bag too.

3.) A straw hat: I know it's old school but, it still ranks in the best way to be in the sun and be safe. We haven't invented anything new to protect the head since the hat, but we have made more fashionable and convenient styles that make UVA/UVB protection aesthetically pleasing.

4.) The Guardian Case for Amazon Kindle: (I hope I get a Kindle for Christmas!) So many others are cooler than me and own the Kindle already. From what I hear, they're great for travel, leisure and life. The Guardian Case protects the screen from sun rays and the waterproof packaging stays afloat at surface level.

5.) The SKYPE App: Maintain a summer romance or professional relationship with anyone in the world on your computer and your mobile phone without losing an arm and leg in charges. SKYPE is available on T-Mobile, Verizon Wireless and AT&T now but check with your carrier for details on rates, options and availability.

6.) Netflix: It is HOT outside! Stay in the a.c. alone or with friends and watch timeless classics, new releases and new finds on Netflix.com. The rates and selection offered by Netflix have hardly any competition. Make it a Netflix Night, and gather 'round your laptop or TV in the comfort of an air-conditioned home.

7.) DualView Cameras: Who hasn't done the "reach around" shot? Whether out having a good time with friends or bumping into a local celeb on the street, capturing the moment has become more efficient at including you in it, thanks to DualView. No more missing persons photos and one-eyed monsters creeping into pics!

8.) Garmin: Enjoy a staycay or vacay by getting "lost" in a new or familiar place. Pick a destination, punch it into the handy Garmin GPS and put Magellan (no pun) to shame. New mobile devices have been added while the old school products still hold up in quality testing on accuracy and helpfulness.

9.) miniMove Boombox for iPod: It's eency weency but, that is just perfect when packing for a picnic in the park. An iPod and AA batteries can keep the party rockin' to your favorite playlists for hours. "And the price is just right," said Baby Bear.

10.) A jump starter: There's nothing worse than a car battery dying and having to sit in a hot--or cold, for that matter--automobile waiting for a good citizen or parking lot security to get a jump. As much as I hate to see my fellow man become obsolete, the jump starter "has the juice now," and I like the fact that I can get a move on to the pool parties and barbecues that much faster.

WORTH IT: (Trust Me) 10 Songs To Download Today

I'm going out on a limb (and not for the last time) to say that these 10 songs will make your day just a little bit better after you listen to them. Finding new music is a warm puppy. I am not responsible for how you go about owning these beauties, but you can most certainly blame me for your satisfaction.

1.) "Ready Or Not" by The Fugees (The Score, 1996)
2.) "Origami" by Ani DiFranco (Educated Guess, 2004)
3.) "For Once In My Life" by Stevie Wonder (For Once In My Life, 1968)
